On Saturday we went snowshoeing by Rabbit Ears Pass (40d 23'08" N 106d 40'52"W) and our destination was a Radio Relay Station about 3 miles in (40d 22'3"N 106d 41'2"W). I gave the coordinates for those of you geeky enough (like me) to plot them on your GPS. The weather was a a little colder and cloudy (as you can see by the picture). But when the sun did peek out, it was just incredible! The views from up above were pretty clear, really nice shot of Rabbit Ears. The snow was soft and powdery. This is an excellent place to telemark, as we could tell with some fresh tracks that were there. Maybe next year we will be able to venture into that sport. After we made our way to the Radio Relay Station, we had lunch, took some pictures and headed through the trees and bushwacked to the trail that connects the 2 trailheads. Much more fun than following the same trail back. We ended up going about 4.7 to 5 miles (hard to tell since we lost satellite in the trees). Total time snowshoeing was just over 2 hours. Great trail and look forward to going back to that area again soon. There is a longer route (that 3 of us were not up for) that takes you to Walton Peak. Maybe next time.....
The drive back to Denver was good until the typical slowing heading into Georgetown and through Idaho Springs. Even with the traffic we were still home in just under 3 hours.
Oh, on the drive up (at night) we encountered a close call with some deer crossing the road. The really bad places were from Kremmling up to Muddy Creek Pass. We saw a car flash their lights as we approached a hill and sure enough at the top in the opposite lane there was a deer laying on it's side with it's legs still moving. I have seen road kill on the side of the road, but nothing like this. So on the way back to Denver we you could see all the deer carcasses being eaten by the birds on the side of the road. We stopped counting after 15!

I was in Steamboat Springs with Kim, Diane & Keith. We had a great time on the mountain enjoying the beautiful weather! It was sunny & clear blue skis on Thursday & Friday. A little too warm to keep the snow, but the conditions were actually very good. I decided to snowboard since I like the sport and am bored with alpine skiing. This was my 7th & 8th time riding and after a few turns I was back on track again! It has been almost 2 years since I have been on a snowboard, so I was surprised to see how quickly it all came back. I am definitely getting better at my turns, and trying to go a little faster, but a couple of jammed shoulders kept my speed down. Nothing that a couple of soaks in the hot tub didn't help.
We ate at Cugino's Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant and it was very good! Great atmosphere! Other than buying a new pair of Keen Newport H2 sandals we did not have that much excitement. But we did go snowshoeing on Saturday and that will be the next post.....

Sweet Ride
A few of you know that I have been looking for a new bike to race on this year. I came across this one and thought that maybe just cruising this year would be better.

I think I need a new helmet....
Leave it to the Italians for excellent marketing. I usually do not buy things just because I see an advertisement, but I bet this helmet will make me faster.

Bamboo Clothes?
bamboo
Check out the latest in clothing material. Some active-wear designers now weave antimicrobial bamboo into fabrics that mimic silk, cashmere, fleece & cotton. This is less expensive and more environmentally friendly than luxury textiles. Patagonia is actually looking into usig bamboo. I think this is a cool idea and another way to look at utilizing green materials.

Attention: If you want to use me as a reference...
....it may be a good idea that I actually know your full name and remember who you are!
So I get this phone call today from a Human Resource person for Boulder Medical Center. She told me that she is about to offer
So now I am baffled, who is this
Then, this afternoon I get a call.....(it goes something like this)
caller: Hey, long time no talk.
me: Who is this?
caller: this is -insert full name here-, -pause- I guess you don't remember me.
me: You are right, who are you?
caller: We were neighbors about 5 years ago.
me: -pause- -insert first name here-, yes I remember now. You had never told me your last name. When was the last time we saw each other?
caller: probably 4 years ago.
me: So, -insert first name here-, do you think you may want to update your references?
caller: yep, probably a good idea.
me: well... sorry about that, but how do you expect me to give a reference about someone that I have not spoken to in over 4 years and I never knew your last name and I had never worked with you?!
caller: I guess you're right.
me: ok, bye....

Can you beat this game?!
It will take a while, but worth it. This guy is amazing at creating this game. You have to do certain things in sequence. Tough to figure out, but it can be done. It took 4 of us and about 1 hour of trying different sequences to do it.
Good Luck!

You said what?
The Irish daughter had not been to the house for over five years.
Upon her return, her father cussed her. "Where have you been all this time, you ingrate! Why didn't you write us,not even one line, to let us know how you were doing? Why didn't you call? You little tramp! Don't you know what you put your Mum and I through?"
Crying, the girl replied, " Dad ... I became a prostitute."
"WHAT?!! Out of here, you shameless harlot! Sinner! You're a disgrace to this family. I don't ever want to see you again!"
"OK, Dad, as you wish. I just came back to give Mum this luxury fur coat, title deeds to a 10- bedroom mansion, plus a savings account certificate for $5 million; for my little brother, this gold Rolex; and for you, Daddy, the spanking new Mercedes Limited Edition convertible that's parked outside, plus a lifetime membership to the country club, an invitation for you all to spend New Year's Eve aboard my new yacht in the Riviera, and ....."
The father interrupted her and asked, "Now what was it you said you had become?"
The girl answered, "A prostitute, Dad."
"Oh, Be Jesus! You scared me half to death, girl. I thought you said a protestant. Come here and give your old man a hug!"

"...free parking anywhere in America for anyone driving a hybrid car."
Now that is a GREAT idea! This article was passed along to me and Thomas Friedman makes some excellent points (as always).
Here is an excerpt I particularly like:
"...Where are college kids these days? I would like to see every campus in America demand that its board of trustees disinvest from every U.S. auto company until they improve their mileage standards. Every college town needs to declare itself a "Hummer-free zone." You want to drive a gas-guzzling Humvee? Go to Iraq, not our campus."

"If people in Florida can wear bikinis, a little underwear showing isn't going to hurt anybody"
Droopy-Pants Bill Dropped
It's pretty sad that this was even presented as a bill and the State House actually approved it (60-34)! But it was killed in the Senate (unanimously).
I'm confused.... a Democrat (Del. Algie T. Howell) actually sponsored this bill and a Republican (Sen. Thomas K. Norment Jr.) actually said it was an embarrassment to the commonwealth of Virginia. What's going on in this state?!
Regardless, some people came to their senses and realized that butt cleavage is ok. :)

Personal review of "Pro"
Some friends & I went to see "Pro" last night at the Flatirons Theater in Boulder.
Dave Towle as his usual self did a fantastic job MC'ing the whole night. There were some big names in the crowd (Andy Hampsten, Nelson Vails, Anne Trombley, Tim Duggan, Travis Brown, Chris Wherry) and each went up on stage and helped with giving away door prizes. The director, Jamie Paolinetti, was also there and extremely shy. He does not come across as a good public speaker.
I have a copy of "The Hard Road" and have watched it a couple of times. It is a behind the scenes view of the first & last year of the NetZero professional cycling team. In comparing the 2 documentaries, I think Jamie did a better job with "The Hard Road". "Pro", is an exciting documentary, however some the the camera angles were not that great and the interviews with the riders could have been done better.
My rating is 3 of 5 cogs.

Snowshoeing
Here is our route we took on our snowshoe hike.
It was a beautiful day, with some cloud cover but not cold at all. This is a very easy snowshoe with rolling terrain. Total distance was 4.7 miles.
